CBD Gummies vs. Hemp Gummies: What’s the Difference?

Uncategorized

When it comes to the state of today’s CBD market, I know two things for sure. The first is that CBD gummies are unbelievably popular products. Gummies easily comprise the fastest-growing segment of the CBD market aside from standard CBD oil, and it’s easy to see why. They’re a very tasty and convenient way of getting your daily dose!

CBD Gummies vs Hemp Gummies

The second fact of life in today’s CBD market is that CBD gummies can become very expensive, very quickly. People who use CBD and enjoy it are very motivated to save some money if they can, and that’s caused some of the makers of hemp products to behave in ways that don’t seem entirely honest to me.

That’s why it’s so important to understand the difference between CBD gummies vs. hemp gummies and to ensure that you always buy CBD gummies from a reliable seller. In this article, I’m going to clue you in to a CBD scam that I’ve been seeing more and more often recently.

Why You Need to Know the Difference Between CBD Gummies and Hemp Gummies

Reading this article, you’re going to learn about what appears to be a major scam – or at least an intentional omission of facts – being perpetuated on major online marketplaces like Amazon and eBay.

The reason why you need to understand the difference between CBD gummies and hemp gummies is that hemp gummies will appear on websites like Amazon when you search for CBD products. The companies selling those products will use language similar to what makers of CBD products use. You’ll see statements about how relaxing the products are and how they might be useful for fighting inflammation. You’ll see phrases like “pure hemp extract” and will even see “product strengths” in milligrams.

Sounds like a CBD product, right? However, the unfortunate reality, however, is that hemp gummies actually contain no CBD whatsoever. That’s why knowing the difference between CBD gummies and hemp gummies is so important.

What Are the Ingredients of CBD Gummies?

What are you getting when you buy a jar of CBD gummies? Let’s look at the ingredients in a typical jar of CBD gummies.

  • Corn syrup
  • Sugar
  • Water
  • Gelatin
  • Citric acid
  • Flavors
  • Carnauba wax
  • Colors
  • CBD hemp extract

As you can see, CBD is on the list of ingredients. Note that for the vegetarians and vegans out there, you can also find plenty of CBD gummies with vegan gelling agents like agar.

What Are the Ingredients of Hemp Gummies?

So, what’s in a typical jar of hemp gummies? Let’s look at an ingredients list.

  • Hemp oil
  • Corn syrup
  • Water
  • Gelatin
  • Citric acid
  • Colors
  • Flavors
  • Carnauba wax

In hemp gummies, the “hemp oil” ingredient refers to hemp seed oil, which is the exact same culinary oil that you might cook with or add to salad dressing. The oil is pressed from hemp seeds, which have virtually no cannabinoid content. In fact, hemp oil processors specifically wash the seeds to ensure that the oil won’t be contaminated with hemp plant material. Regardless of how a maker of hemp gummies might advertise its products, you should not buy those products expecting them to have any CBD content at all because hemp oil has no CBD.

Exposing the Hemp Gummies Scam

Is it going too far to call the hemp gummies on Amazon and eBay a scam? Well, the products come up when you search for CBD. The makers use the same packaging designs and marketing language that CBD makers use. I’ve never seen a maker of hemp gummies actually come out and say that the products contain no CBD. You can clearly see from the customer reviews that buyers think they’re getting CBD gummies. That seems pretty misleading to me, even if the sellers aren’t strictly lying about what their products are.

So, why would sellers want to make it appear as though their hemp gummies are the same as CBD gummies?

  • The market for CBD products is huge. The CBD market was worth close to $3 billion in 2020 and was expected to continue growing rapidly from there.
  • Amazon and eBay both do not allow the sale of CBD products on their sites. Hemp oil, however, is allowed. Selling hemp gummies on those sites allows companies to offer products that look similar to CBD gummies on the surface without being kicked off of those websites. It also allows the sellers to market to those websites’ huge customer bases. Buyers don’t understand the difference and assume that they’re getting the same product for less.
  • Hemp oil is much, much cheaper than CBD hemp extract. Sellers of hemp gummies can charge incredibly low prices – and since legitimate CBD gummies aren’t cheap, buyers have an incentive to give hemp gummies a shot.
  • CBD typically has no overt effect when you take it. Most people would find it difficult or impossible without a lab test to identify a CBD product that doesn’t actually contain CBD.

The real kicker is that, when you look at the hemp gummies on a website like Amazon, you’ll see incredibly high milligram strengths that make the products look much more potent than the gummies that legitimate CBD sellers offer. For CBD gummies, a typical strength might be anywhere from 250-3,000 milligrams for the entire package of gummies. That works out to perhaps 25 mg per gummy, which makes complete sense. There’s only so much CBD that you can add to a recipe before you’ll end up with a pile of mush instead of a gummy candy.

When you look at the hemp gummies on Amazon, though, you’ll see that the makers of those products are putting milligram strengths as high as 7,500,000 mg on their labels. How is that even possible? The answer is that it’s not possible. The only way to get 7,500,000 mg of CBD into your system is by consuming more than 16 pounds of pure CBD isolate. You’ll never get that amount of CBD into a workable candy.

This is a case, also, where the labeling of hemp gummies isn’t just misleading – it’s a flat-out lie. In the “7,500,000 mg” example mentioned above, the jar includes 160 gummies. Let’s do some simple math. If you divide 7,500,000 mg by 160 gummies, you get a weight of just under 47,000 mg per gummy. That’s about 1.65 ounces. Those must be some seriously huge gummies!

If You Want CBD Gummies, Don’t Buy Hemp Gummies

I hope that you found this article helpful and that you now understand the reality of what you’re really getting – very expensive candy – when you buy hemp gummies on websites like Amazon and eBay. Yes, CBD gummies do cost more than hemp gummies – but thankfully, the prices are continuing to come down rapidly. The only way to get CBD gummies is by buying CBD gummies. Don’t let an unscrupulous seller mislead you into believing otherwise.
